MALU NATAKOK (b. 1992)
Natakok is a young carver from Salliq, (Coral Harbour), Nunavut. He began making art in 2015, inspired by other local emerging artists in his area. Most of the materials used for Natakok’s carvings are locally sourced from his hunting expeditions or are donated to him, since materials are scarce in Salliq.
The world Natakok captures fluidity and movement as well as playful narrative – with plenty character infused into the stone as if come alive and dance or leap away. Natakok is known for whimsical narratives in his carvings, and he carves with masterful skill. Though his career as an artist began fairly recently, Natakok has carved a niche for himself that stands out in the Inuit world of carving.
Natakok was chosen in 2020 to be featured in Inuit Art Quarterly for one of the most exciting carvers to know and collect.
